Preliminary Bachelor of Theology Honours

If you have a non-theological Bachelor degree, but do not have an undergraduate qualification in Theology, you can register for our Prelim BTh Hons as a means to get a basic foundation of Theology, and admission to ATS’ accredited Bachelor Honours of Theology (BTh Hons).

The Prelim BTh Hons is a minimum one-year course.

  • Studying full-time, the student should be able to study ±40 hours of study per week for 32 weeks.
  • Study part-time over 2 years, the student should be able to study ±20 hours of study per week for 32 weeks.
  • Study part-time over 3 years, the student should be able to study ±13.5 hours of study per week for 32 weeks.

It consists of one Biblical language (Hebrew or Greek) on first-year level (2 semesters) and seven theological modules for which you will write one exam per module:

1st semester modules:

  • Dogmatics & Ethics
  • Missiology
  • Pastoral Counselling

2nd semester modules:

  • Church History
  • Pastoral Ministries
  • New Testament
  • Old Testament

On successful completion of the Prelim BTh Hons, you will gain admission through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) into ATS’ Bachelor Honours of Theology (BTh Hons).

Please note the requirement that you have access to a stable Internet connection to complete the exams on ATS’ online assessment platform, on a specific date, for a specific time period.


Study fees for the Prelim BTh Hons (2026)

  • R2,035 per module for each of the seven theological disciplines, and
  • R2,205 per biblical language module of which you have to complete two (e.g. Greek 1st and 2nd semester).

The deposit fee per module is (35%) and is payable on the date of registration. The remaining amount needs to be paid in 3 equal instalments by latest end of April (1st semester) or October (2nd semester).

A handling and dispatching fee for additional prescribed books and study material is payable if you do not collect your material from ATS. Estimated R200.
